Haula Beach Kauai

If you’re searching for a beach that has all the look and feel of a deserted island, then Haula Beach is for you. A small beach located on Kauai’s far, south-eastern shore, Haula Beach feels like another world with lithified cliffs, a wide-open sunny expanse, crashing waves, and a very blue ocean framed by Kawelikoa Point. All this gives the beach a raw and untamed feel. Adding to the mystique, at least on our recent visit, is an improvised beach shack built from driftwood and adorned with discarded netting and other items. It’s a scene right out of Robinson Crusoe.

At Haula Beach you will find plenty of sun and absolutely no shade. Offshore, the sea is turbulent and the rocky beach is no place for swimming or snorkeling. Haula Beach is best for sightseeing and beachcombing.

Haula Beach is about a quarter mile from the main part of Mahaulepu Beach. Park at Mahaulepu Beach (requires off road driving to reach the beach), then hike east along the coast. You can also park at Makauwahi Cave (also requires off road driving) and hike east along Gillin’s Beach past Mahaulepu Beach. Additionally, you can hike the Mahaulepu Trail from Shipwreck Beach near the Grand Hyatt Kauai to the area. Regardless of how far you are hiking, take plenty of water and use plenty of sunscreen. This area is hot and sunny.

Hike east past Haula Beach and you will soon see this fence. We stopped our journey at the fence, but have heard it is possible to hike all the way to Kawelikoa Point (though we are unsure of access rights).
